Thank God It's Fri-yay!

Now let's be honest here - Simply who doesn't love fries? Those long chunky fresh pieces of potatoes, sprinkled with salt and served with ketchup! "Fries over guys!" anytime right?

So if you call yourself a "fries" person and are still drooling over McDonald's and Burger King fries, then it's about time you need to read this list:

Presenting to you the best of fries that Mumbai city has to offer:

1. The J Cafe, Churchgate and Bandra:

The icing on the cake - they have not restricted their menu simply to the normal plain salted fries! Everything from Schezwan to Mayonnaise and all that comes in between with toppings of Chicken, Pizza, Nuggets or just the plain old sauces, you can literally customize your fries according to your wishes!

Recommendations: BBQ Fries, Chili Cheese Fries, Pizza Fries.
Psst...they serve fries for Jain as well!

2. The VJ Cafe, Vile Parle:

Famous for their mind-blowing Apple Ciders and fun-filled ambiance, another hit from the makers of Doolally is their plate of House Fries, complemented with 5 different sauces. Thicker than the other places and crunchier to say the least, hands down one of the best places to have them fries!

A favorite with the regulars, their Mac-N-Cheese Fries are literally the cheesy combination Macaroni and Cheese on a base of fries.  Also, their Villa Special Fries Basket is a dish straight out of heaven for all the fries fans out there - A basket full of wedges, fries and sweet potato fries, this is one of their stellar dishes.

It all started with Café Coffee Day opening shop in the City of Dreams. Bringing out a generation of youth who swore by their college addas and McDonalds, CCD managed to kick-start a revolution that few would have foreseen back then. Cafes soon became the breeding grounds for new-found love, a cool new hangout for all the college-going kids and inspiring hundreds of restaurants to follow suit. A generation of people who swore by their cutting chai now found solace in the deeply brewed Espresso and Cappuccino.

Just about then, as people professed their new found love for coffee, Tea Villa Café opened up in the humble surroundings of Vile Parle East. What started off as a small joint serving tea from across the country and worldwide, soon snowballed into quite rightly one of the biggest cafes to have graced Mumbai.

Tomorrow, the 21st of August, as they celebrate the completion of their 2nd year in Mumbai, we look at 5 reasons why Tea Villa is the quintessential all-vegetarian café beloved by Mumbaikars:

  1.  The scrumptious all-vegetarian fare:
Chinese, Mexican, Lebanese, Indian, Burgers, Pizza, Pasta, Cheese Fritters, Samosa, Sandwiches,  Sizzlers, Fondue…and the list goes on and on! Tea Villa serves one of the most extensive menus in town and something which even a hard-core non-vegetarian cannot rue about!

  2.  Unbelievably classy ambiance:
Be it the subtle placid ambiance of their Vile Parle outlet or the uber cool and posh interiors of the Bandra one or the mind-blowing eye-feasting looks of their Versova outlet, each and every branch of Tea Villa Café has a different, novel and classy feel about it. They recently started with a rooftop section in their Versova outlet and buoy, it’s beautiful! Definitely one of the most beautiful places to spend time with your loved ones sipping tea while gazing at the sea and relaxing in the cool breeze blowing by.

  3. For the love of "chai":
Going back to our traditional roots, TVC not just offers a plethora of options ranging from Assam Tea to the feisty Masala Chai, it provides you with 150 brands of tea from all around the world. You can have their classic Blueberry or Cranberry flavored green tea or the flavorful Tiramisu tea or the spectacular eye-popping flower teas. Tea Villa Café has certainly made a powerful impact in getting back the chai-chai fans in us!

  4. Age no bar, love no bar:Unlike most of the café joints which primarily cater to the college-going or professional youth, TVC manages to appease customers coming from all age groups – big or small. Don’t be surprised if you happen to see a bunch of over-zealous kids celebrating their birthdays cutting a waffle cake or an adorable cute couple hanging out in the corner or perhaps a bunch of 20-something chilling out or a group of septuagenarians reminiscing old times over a cup of tea. There is something for everyone!

  5.  WAFFLES, WAFFLES, WAFFLES! :
Now, whom are we kidding? Everyone just loves chocolate in any form whatsoever! But Tea Villa's waffles are a class apart! As time passed, TVC has managed to usurp most of its competitors to be one of the favorite places to munch on this delightful dessert. Soft, slightly crunchy bread draped and bathed in oodles and oodles of chocolate, the Tea Villa waffles have a huge list of fan following. Don’t be surprised if you walk into the outlet and see a bunch of foreign nationals and TV actors munching on them!
As they complete their 2nd anniversary on the Mumbai turf, we wish them all the best for their bright future and to more and waffleier delights!

As a part of their celebrations, Tea Villa Café is hosting a competition this weekend. Walk into any of the outlet and click a creative selfie at the designated selfie points. Share it on your Facebook, Twitter or Instagram profile and stand a chance to win some cool prizes!

Just sit back and take a moment to think about this – We are living in a generation where kids are not aspiring to be engineers, lawyers or doctors, but Pokémon trainers!
Credits - www.deviantart.com
Yeah, does that hit you with nostalgia? Reminds you of a tiny version of you ensconced in a corner in front of the TV, avidly watching Ash, Brock and Misty out in the hinterlands chasing fictional legendary characters called Pokémon with nothing but a handful of red and white balls and a will to catch’em all?

Didn’t we all wish we could grow up to be a Pokémon trainer and go about catching them mystical creatures?

But alas, life happened and here we are staring at this post with an enlarged belly around the midriff and positively cursing our social life which made us turn from a skinny young teenager to a working individual battling it out in the real gyms to shed those fat pounds!

Although most of us are now way past our prime to catch’em all Pokémon (yeah that vicious circle of life, family, future blah blah blah!), we can still do something of the enormous pot-belly that our career has so graciously given us.

Ignoring junk food might be as difficult for you as it was for Voldemort to stop chasing Harry, but just by having this particular thing in your diet on a daily basis will not just help you shed that excess fat but also make you feel refreshed, healthy and fit. Sounds too good to be true?

Yeah, it is and this particular magical thing (pretty sure the title might have already given up the hint) is *ta dum diss* - FRUITS!

Don’t worry, this post is not at all yet another of those self-help posts which will make you feel dejected about your body, health, life, girlfriend, family, future, death etc. etc. There is no space for such kind of negativity in life man!

So this post is basically about how fruits combined with those cheesy pastas, yummy burgers and mouth-watering pizzas can do wonders for you!! Imagine having all of those high calories stuff (in limits of course) and yet not gaining weight? Don’t believe me, check out Jennifer Lawrence’s post on her fitness!

Coming back to the main topic, fruits are quite literally God’s gift to us. You want them vitamins, those fibers, the proteins? You have them all in fruits! But the perennial question has always been – Who’d eat that boring plain fruit when you have those amazing cheesy delectable dishes?
And to answer that right back at you, US Premium Agri Food in association with QuikRelations came up with this unique conceptual game called "Fruit-a-thon"!!!!

After the spectacular success of the first year, USA Pears and Washington Apples hosted their second Fruit-A-Thon this year. And the aim - devour delicious fruit recipes made out of those luscious juicy pears and apples and the team to finish it first over a competition of four rounds would be crowned winners!

So the competition was basically divided into 4 rounds, comprising of these gorgeous delicious dishes:

1.    Shake It Up- A large jug of heavenly apple milkshake! No surprises here! Be the first to finish it and get your team to win!
2.    Salad Salsa- A large bowl of apple and pear salad deliciously sinful you couldn't tell its healthy!
3.    Dip-a-licious- Eat as many crackers with the creamy apple dip that will leave you wanting more...
4.    Muffin Topper- Healthy apple cinnamon muffins that you can eat to your heart’s content without feeling guilty!

The best part – sinful as they sound and look, they equally killer in taste and healthiness.

So we had three teams consisting of four participants each participating in this unique competition:
The Team 1 aptly named themselves as the Fruit Kings.
The Team 2 sure were fans of the humble Nutella and so they called themselves the Fruit-Tellas.
The Team 3 surely were fanatic about them fruits and rightly called themselves the Fruit Maniacs.

Each round required one member from each team to participate in it. So essentially, at the end of the #USFreshFruitathon challenge, all the four members of the team have had to participate once each to gulp down recipes prepared using USA Pears and Washington Apples.

Muffin winner
Needless to say, the competition turned out to be an outright success. The participants, most of them falling in the age group of 15-35 were positively surprised that fruits of all the things, could be made to taste so delicious and mouth-watering. Who wouldn’t want them now if you are already getting them as tasty as those calorie-loaded junk food?

The Fruit-A-Thon proved to be a success, but more importantly, it left a lasting impression on the minds of these kids and adults alike, that fruits are perhaps not just the reason why we know about gravity thanks to Newton nor are they mere decorations on trees bland as them veggies, devoid of taste and flavor unlike meat. They are in fact those wonderful gifts of Mother Earth that can recharge your dead tired batteries, keep you fit as a horse and you might not even need to skip out on your desserts and junk food at all to remain healthy, wealthy and wise.
So, as they say and I quote,

Share a Fruit, Share the love! #MayTheFruitBeWithYou

Been quite sometime since I've written a blog post, eh? Well, I'd just put it on the human nature to work your butt off to make the ends meet! But to hell with the drama, it's time for FARZIFICATION!!!!!

For the uninitiated, Farzi Cafe is the food fraternity's first family, the Kalra's brainchild and buoy, it's wonderful! After dazzling the capital with all the lights and drama, Farzi Cafe finally makes it to the Mumbai shores and needless to say, Mumbai has been FARZIFIED!

So what's all the hype about this Farzi Cafe??
Farzi Cafe is a brilliant cross between a cafe and a fine dine restaurant. Coming up with the customary molecular gastronomy that the Kalra's are so famous for, Farzi adds a touch of brilliance by making the prices comparatively cheaper compared to the rest of their masterpieces. So, here is a restaurant which charges you like a cafe and serves you like a restaurant!

Running down the basics,
Cost for 2: Rs.1500/- approx
Cards Accepted: Accepted
Cuisines: North Indian, Continental
Parking available: Paid Parking available
Opening hours: 12 noon to 4pm, 6pm to 1am
Recommendations: Parle G Cheesecake,Ratatouille Pav Bhaji, Dal Chawal Aranchani, Margherita Kulcha, Farzi Idea(drink)

Ambiance: Although the name has the word "Cafe" ingrained in it, Farzi Cafe exhibits some stellar ambiance beating many of the big-ticket restaurants in this sector by miles. Quite spacious with comfy cushion seats straddled on the entire length opposite the bar and minuscule tables seating 4 and 2 in between, the cafe is dimly lit but the visuals on the wall complimenting the music give the place a very "trippy" and "classy" feeling at the same time.

The fancy Amuse Bouche served before starting any meal

Food: Living up to the tag of being the pioneers in molecular gastronomy, Farzi Cafe yet again dazzles pulling out some kick-ass tricks from its magic bag. For those who have already been to any of the Kalras' establishments, you might find an uncanny resemblance to some of the presentations - a pleasant nostalgia. For those who are new to this, you might simply find yourself falling in love with the way the food is presented to you. Be it the humble Amuse Bouche (provided prior to the meal) or the various Palate Cleansers in between (love their Irish Bailey Cream Pops personally) or the various mains, Farzi Cafe with all the nitrogen smoke, dazzling lights and creative usage of regular dishes adds a quirky new presentation to the daily affair.

What will make you sing in joy?
1. Parle G Cheesecake: I know it's a sin to have desserts even before the mains start, lest even mentioning it! But trust me folks, this one masterpiece of a dessert curated by the brilliant chefs behind the veils of the Cafe's kitchens will make you sing in delight. I mean, come on who'd think of replacing the crust of a standard cheesecake with our very own Parle-Gs? And sprinkling Cadbury's Gems on top of it - Well, just shut up and take my money already!
RATING : 5/5

Parle-G Cheesecake

2. Ratatouille Pav Bhaji: Another winner right off the shelves of the Farzi's kitchen! The humble French peasant's dish, Ratatouille is given a desi twist by mixing it up with the Mumbaiya Pav Bhaji and the result?

It retains the spicy flavors of the Pav Bhaji complimenting the simple taste of the vegetable stew of the French Ratatouille.
RATING : 4.5/5

Ratatouille Pav Bhaji

3. Dal Chawal Arancini: Yet another successful fusion of Indian and Western cuisine! The Italian Arancini rice balls here are prepared with the "maa k haath" k Dal Chawal and buoy, you will be swooning over it! It even has a "papad" topped over it!
RATING : 4.5/5

Dal Chawal Arancini Balls

Service: Remember those times when you used to go to an Udipi joint and ask the server, "Bhaiya kya milega?", only to be replied in a single monotonous tone about all the South Indian dishes you might have or not even heard of and if you dared ask him about a particular dish, you are surely getting a death stance followed by a very curt reply on its ingredients and its making. The good part - the servers used to have excellent knowledge about their food, the bad - they had no time whatsoever to waste on your curiosity.
The servers here at Farzi, like their hardworking contemporaries at the South Indian restaurants, have an in-depth exquisite knowledge about all the dishes served here. And to add an icing on it unlike the former, they are trained so well that you might actually be convinced in thinking that you've definitely (maybe a case of long lost friends?). Jokes apart, the servers here are cheerful, witty and way beyond helpful to say the least!

Chuski Margarita

Conclusion: (School habits are hard to change trust me!) Farzi Cafe not just relies on its food but gives you an overall experience that you are surely not going to forget anytime soon!
Go enjoy yourselves folks!

Sunlight trickled in through the creaking gaps in the window sill, shining like a spotlight upon his tiny gleeful face. “Anytime soon!” he murmured to himself, smiling. It wasn’t long before his excited minuscule face finally broke into a wide smile, as he closed his eyes to take in the waft of freshly prepared “aaloo ki sabzi” and the sinful smell of ghee laden rotis

A rhythmic ringing music opened his eyes abruptly as he trained them towards the source of sound. The spotlight shining upon the 4 year old’s face now suddenly found its way blocked by the silhouette of a tall lady with ghungroos dangling across her ankles. With kind eyes and a smile that shone like the first rays of the golden sun kissing the lush green earth, the tall lady walked towards him gracefully. Dressed in a humble chiffon sari, it reminded the kid of those holy goddesses that featured so regularly in “Mahabharata” that he so used to watch religiously every morning with his grandpa. He couldn’t help but marvel at his “Supermom” as she sat next to him, tore off a bit of the smoldering hot roti, grabbed a piece of the luscious potato sabzi inside the roti and with a smiling caring face asked him to open his mouth wide ‘Aaaaa’……

.

.
.
.
The honking blaring noise of the car behind painfully brought him back to reality. Cursing the sweltering heat and the bundled noisy traffic, the now 26-year old Ronak stepped out of his daydream as the bus driver hit upon the accelerator to move the bus out of the now-turned green signal.

For a tiny golden moment, it felt as if he had travelled 21 years back in time to the small old kitchen of his lovely home and with lunch time around the corner, his doting and caring mother set about whipping his favorite “aaloo ki sabzi” coupled with piping hot rotis, fresh off the tawa, loaded and laden with ghee.

As the bus driver brought the vehicle to a screeching halt in front of his swanky sky-high office in Mumbai, 1000 miles and 21 years away from the tiny little kitchen, the halo-like sunlight around his mom and those sinful hot rotis, how he wished he could go back to those golden days to have a bite of the food off the hands of his mother who had so lovingly prepared it for him.

Isn’t it more or less the state of every Indian out there, who have to travel all the way from their distant villages and towns to metropolis like Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi in the tangible search for a source of income and livelihood and to make two ends meet?  How, they have to make do with the same old mundane daily food prepared by the canteen and restaurant chefs, lacking the warmth and the love dwelling inside the dishes that their moms so lovingly used to prepare?

For people like Ronak residing in the humungous diverse city of Mumbai, still craving for that loving morsel of homely food, a new app is here to give them all the love that they need. The only drawback, it won’t be their own moms, but some rather talented home-chefs across the city who will make the same food that they prepare for their own kids.

That’s the name which will come as a savior to the current generation and breed of urban working crowd, who have to shell out some rather exorbitant money on restaurant foods, which is not just unhealthy, but also lacks that ‘HOMELY’ feel.
Partnering with some of the most popular home-chefs across Mumbai, Homely have created the simplest and quickest way to order incredibly delicious “mommy-style” meals. The home cooks, which are fondly called the “Yummakers” would provide you with the same food that they prepare for their own kids!

Thanks to dear friend and an exceptional blogger herself Maitreyi, the creative geniuses behind the Homely Now sent across a sample from one of the talented “Yummakers” for us to taste.
Delivered in sharp 45 minutes, the food of the day included luscious

  •         Paneer Butter Masala
  •        Piping hot home-made Rotis.
  •        Tangy Raita.
  •         Fresh and crisp rice.
  •        Sinful Chocolate Brownie.

Just about a perfect meal for a Sunday afternoon!
Starting with the subzi of the day, Paneer Butter Masala was brilliant, just like how you’d find it at a Punjabi home, everything from the slightly sweetish tang to the chataka of the masala, one word – PERFECT! Couple it off with fresh hot rotis and tangy raita, this makes for one perfect home-made meal! After all, it is made by an aspiring talented home-maker!

A big kudos for Homely to not just cater to the regular, young, office-going crowd who hog up on frivolous unhygienic food on a daily basis but also to those aspiring home-makers who’ve got an immense culinary talent and all they needed was one push!
So all you hungry souls out there, craving for ‘maa-k-haath ka khana’, Homely is here to help you!!
